Bullshit, Pragmatic Deception, and Natural Language Processing

چکیده
Fact checking and fake news detection has garnered increasing interest within the natural language processing (NLP) community in recent years, yet other aspects of misinformation remain unexplored. One such phenomenon is `bullshit', which different disciplines have tried to define since it first entered academic discussion nearly four decades ago. bullshitters useless, because factual reality typically plays no part their assertions: Where liars deceive about content, goals. Bullshitting misleading itself, necessitates identifying points at pragmatic conventions are broken with deceptive intent. This paper aims introduce bullshitology into field NLP by tying questions a QUD-based definition, providing two approaches bullshit annotation, finally outlining combinations methods will be helpful classify kinds linguistic bullshit.

Deception-aware Pragmatic Inference
Pragmatic competence i.e., the ability to understand intended meaning is a long standing challenge in communication. This work proposes a computational framework for pragmatic inference that is based on reasoning by taking into account the realistic assumption that any communication could be deceptive and that intentions can be reflected in language use. Pragmatic inference is examined under th...
متن کاملNew trends in natural language processing: statistical natural language processing.
The field of natural language processing (NLP) has seen a dramatic shift in both research direction and methodology in the past several years. In the past, most work in computational linguistics tended to focus on purely symbolic methods. Recently, more and more work is shifting toward hybrid methods that combine new empirical corpus-based methods, including the use of probabilistic and informa...
متن کاملFormalising Pragmatic Information for Natural Language Generation
The main aim of the work presented here is to demonstrate that certain contextual information, traditionally considered to be beyond the scope of semantic representations, can be formalised sufficiently to allow its use in natural language generation (NLG) decisions, in particular syntactic choice. This ‘pragmatic’ information, where the term pragmatic is interpreted as indicating any reference...
متن کاملPragmatic Overloading in Natural Language Instructions
It has long been noted that Natural Language utterances can communicate more than their conventional meaning (Grice, 1975). It has also been noted that behaving appropriately in response to instructions given in Natural Language requires understanding more than their conventional meaning This paper addresses one mechanism by which speakers convey, and hearers derive, such additional aspects of ...
